The Union of the Affected People by Chevron-Texaco UDAPT is organizing the sixth edition of the Global Antichevron Day. For more than 26 years, the affected peasants and indigenous people have been engaged in a legal, political and communicational battle to demand the reparation of the Ecuadorian Amazon, polluted by the oil company Texaco - today Chevron.
In August 2018, under the unjust system of Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS), an arbitration tribunal ordered the government of Ecuador to overturn the Ecuadorian ruling that ordered the U.S. oil company to pay $9.5 billion to repair the environmental damage which is still affecting more than 30,000 people. Moreover, it ordered a multimillion-dollar compensation from Chevron. It is unacceptable that the interests of multinational corporations prevail over human rights.
For this reason, this year, on May 21, under the slogan "Rights for people, rules for corporations, STOP ISDS!", hundreds of affected people from the Ecuadorian and Colombian Amazon rainforest march on foot and by bicycle to claim respect for our rights.
In view of the May 21 mobilization, this year we have organized many events with the goal of providing information on the current state of the crimes committed by the oil company Chevron and about the issue of corporate impunity, the ISDS system and its consequences on human rights.
