Our Toxic Tour is a guided tour of the area contaminated by Chevron-Texaco, which takes visitors to the specific places where the company operated, in order to show the effects of the oil company's bad extractive practices. The aim is to raise awareness on the environmental disaster caused by the contamination of the soil, water and air.
The tour is open to anyone who wants to learn about and see with their own eyes the impacts of pollution.
Making everyone aware of the severe environmental damage caused by Chevron-Texaco and how it directly impacts the lives of the local people , both indigenous and settlers, so that it may not be repeated anywhere else in the world.
The visit includes a tour through the fields that were exclusively operated by Texaco until 1990, such as the Bermejo, Charapa, Lago Agrio, Parahuaco, Atacapi, Aguarico, Guanta, Shushufindi, Sacha, Yuca, Auca and Cononaco fields, among others. These fields are located in the territory of the indigenous nationalities and settlers affected by the contamination, who live in the provinces of Sucumbíos and Orellana.
In each visit participants are taken to different places such as extraction wells , gas incinerators that are still active (there are more than 380 in the area) and some of the 880 "pools" where Texaco booted toxic waste associated with the oil extraction process.
During the visit the whole history of oil operations , pollution and impact on affected people is explained.
The first Toxic Tour was held in May 2003, while the lawsuit against Chevron-Texaco was being filed in the Provincial Court of Justice of Sucumbíos.
From that moment on, the tours began to be carried out regularly, with an average of 1 to 3 Toxic Tour every week , depending on people's requests.
